What happened in 1999.
Three modern legends passed away. Lee Falk, the creator of The Phantom, the musician / composer "Moondog" and Stanley Kubrick.
Napster was created, people worried about the millenium bug (Y2K) and Phil Collins did the Tarzan soundtrack.
On the bright side, Peter Morén, Bjorn Yttling and John Eriksson formed sort of a supertrio that year.
At least some of their friends thought so.
They were all living in Stockholm, Sweden and they were also trying to make a living.
After getting a little bit drunk on a summerparty in 1999 Bjorn and John met and spoke about something. They noticed that they both had read "The Phantom" a lot and they had also bought and listened to the same CD.
The CD was "Better Can't Make Your Life Better" by the band "Lilys". A CD with great melodys, strange drumpatterns and complicated chord progressions.
Since John had been a hardcore fusion-music consumer for many years
he though (in a drunken state) that it sounded good to try to play this kind of music with Bjorn and Bjorns friend Peter who Bjorn said also loved "the Lilys" album.
Peter was at that time studying Film Science and went to the movies a lot.
John wasnt studying Movie Science but still went to the movies a lot.
Bjorn did not go to the movies.
The second time John met Peter was in a movie theater.
Peter didnt say a word.
John thought that Peter hated the drumfills that John had nailed during "Peter Bjorn And John"s first musical meeting.
But the thing was that Peter had hurt his throat after (among other things) screaming obscenities from stage with the band "Kung Trattkantarell" (King Funnel Chantarell).
So Peter's doctor had told him not to speak (or scream) for three month.
1999 was the least talkative year in Peter´s life so far.
During the same year another trio "The Violent Femmes" made a song for the "South Park, Bigger, Longer, Uncut" movie. Andre Agassi was the number 1 in tennis, Pete Sampras number 2 and Yevgeny Kafelnikov number 3. A girl called Britney Spears made her debut with "Baby one more time", "Red Hot Chili Peppers" became huge with their record "Californication" and Roxette released an album called "Have a nice day"...
Swedish bands were at that time called things like "The Rockers", "The Shirts" and "The Hungry Pineapples".
Peter, Björn and John decided to name their band "Peter Bjorn And John".
A bit influenced by the name of the band "Peter, Paul and Mary", a trio that actually donated a portion of the profits from their 1999 compilation album "Songs of conscience and concern" to charity.
Peter Bjorn And John took their first band photo with one of their friends polaroid camera,
rehearsed some songs with great melodys, stange drumpatterns and complicated chordprogresions and then played on a gayboat.
(A boat in the harbour of Stockholm that combined a gayclub with a indie-demo-scene).
Since then a lot of stuff have happened.
In 2008 people think that you are seriously stupid if you purchase a cd. Some people haven't read "ThePhantom" and a guy called Rafael Nadal is now the number one in Tennis.
Peter Bjorn And John have now had their photo taken by a real photographer with a real camera, they have made a lot of songs (117), ((including 1 hit, 1 rap and 1 fusion jam)) and they have also played in other places than boats.
In 2009 PB&J will be celebrating 10 years as a trio and 2 and a half years being succesful. |
